Residential Hood Cleaning Handbook

Ducted vs. Ductless Range Hoods

Whether your hood vents outside or recirculates air changes how you maintain it. Here’s the difference — and why both still need cleaning.

Ducted hoods

A ducted hood vents air, grease, and odors outside through ductwork. It’s the most effective option — but grease collects in the filters, hood interior, blower, and along the accessible duct run, all of which need cleaning.

Ductless (recirculating) hoods

A ductless hood filters air through a charcoal filter and recirculates it back into the kitchen. There’s no external venting, so the filters do more work and need attention more often — including periodic charcoal-filter replacement.

Maintenance for each

Both types need regular care, just in different places:

  • Ducted: degrease the metal filters, hood interior, blower, and accessible exhaust
  • Ductless: clean the grease filter and replace the charcoal filter on schedule
  • Both: keep the exterior detailed and the airflow strong

Quick answers

Common questions

Which is better?

Ducted is generally more effective at removing heat, grease, and odors. Ductless is used where external venting isn’t possible.

Do ductless hoods still get greasy inside?

Yes — the grease filter and interior still collect buildup and benefit from professional cleaning.
