How to Clean Greasy Range Hood Filters

Grease-clogged filters are the number-one cause of weak hood airflow. Here is the simple hot-water soak that gets baffle and mesh filters clean without harsh scrubbing.

The hot-water soak method

Fill a sink or large bin with very hot water. Add a few tablespoons of grease-cutting dish soap and a quarter-cup of baking soda. Submerge the filters, soak 10–15 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft brush, rinse, and dry fully before reinstalling.

Baffle vs. mesh filters

Baffle filters (solid metal slats) are durable and handle repeated soaks well. Mesh filters (layered screen) trap grease deeper and may need a longer soak. Both respond best to heat plus a degreaser — not abrasive scrubbing, which can damage mesh.

Can you put hood filters in the dishwasher?

Stainless and mesh filters usually survive a hot dishwasher cycle, but aluminum filters can oxidize and turn a dull gray. When in doubt, hand-soak — it is safe for every filter type.

FAQ

Quick answers

What is the best way to degrease range hood filters?

A soak in very hot water with dish soap and baking soda, then a gentle soft-brush scrub and rinse.

Why are my filters still greasy after washing?

The water was not hot enough or the soak was too short. Heavily loaded filters need 15+ minutes and sometimes a second round; a dedicated degreaser helps.
