How to Clean a Stainless Steel Range Hood Without Scratching It

Stainless looks flawless until you wipe it the wrong way. Here is how to degrease and polish a stainless range hood to a streak-free, fingerprint-resistant shine.

Always work with the grain

Stainless steel has a directional grain, like wood. Wipe along it, never across or in circles. Going against the grain pushes grease into the texture and leaves visible streaks and fine scratches.

Step by step

1. Wipe away loose grease with a microfiber cloth and warm soapy water. 2. For stuck-on grease, spray a stainless-safe degreaser, let it dwell, then wipe with the grain. 3. Dry with a clean microfiber. 4. Finish with a few drops of mineral or stainless oil buffed in with the grain for a streak-free, fingerprint-resistant shine.

What to avoid

  • Steel wool or abrasive pads — they scratch permanently
  • Bleach or chloride cleaners — they pit stainless
  • Wiping across the grain
  • Letting degreaser dry on the surface
